SPOKANE, Washington - The last surviving Canadian who wore a uniform in the First World War turns 109 today.

John Babcock intends to celebrate in a modest way - lunch at his favourite restaurant in Spokane, Washington, where he now lives. He'll be joined by his family and friends and Veteran Affairs Minister Greg Thompson.

Babcock grew up on a farm near Kingston, Ont.

He never made it to the front because he was too young, but he cherishes his memories of the army. (source)
